Petty Pool Learners Shine on BBC’s DIY SOS Project at The Joshua Tree

Petty Pool learners recently had the exciting opportunity to be part of the BBC’s DIY SOS: The Big Build project at The Joshua Tree, a children’s cancer support charity in Sandiway, just next door to Petty Pool.

The project brought together hundreds of volunteers, tradespeople and community supporters to create a brand-new purpose-built support centre – and Petty Pool learners were right at the heart of the action. 

Learners from both the Catering and Horticulture departments stepped up to support the event and contribute their skills to the build. 

Catering learners Ryan and Tilly worked in the refreshment area, providing much-needed hot drinks and snacks to the hardworking crew, contractors, and volunteers. Tilly even had her moment in the spotlight when the TV crew filmed her serving presenter Nick Knowles a cuppa. A budding performer who hopes to go into acting, Tilly described the experience as a “perfect opportunity to practice my skills in front of a professional audience.” Both Ryan and Tilly also had the chance to meet Nick Knowles and presenter Gabby Blackman during their shifts. 

Meanwhile, Horticulture learners Yasmin, Charlie and Jamie joined the landscaping team, helping to create the outdoor areas that will be enjoyed by families visiting The Joshua Tree. All three learners were filmed in action, and Jamie was especially thrilled to assist the crew by holding lighting equipment during the shoot, adding “behind-the-scenes” experience to his day.

Petty Pool learner mentor, Nikki McNulty, who accompanied the learners at Joshua Tree, along with Elizabeth Todd said: 

“We are so proud of our learners for the enthusiasm and professionalism they showed during this community project, which has been talked about so much in our local area. Opportunities like this help build confidence, employability skills, and unforgettable memories. It’s wonderful that their contribution will be part of such a special place for children and families supported by The Joshua Tree.” 

Petty Pool work closely with the Joshua Tree throughout the year, providing much needed respite visits and adventure days for children with cancer and their siblings at their outdoor centre, including Alice, who was recently featured on This Morning with Helen Skelton, filmed on her favourite activity, the zipwire at Petty Pool. The episode featuring Petty Pool learners will air later this year on BBC One as part of Children in Need 2025.
