About In the Community

At Petty Pool in the Community, we do things differently. We are far from a traditional day provision. Everything we do is member-led and shaped by the choices, interests and ambitions of the individuals who join us.

We don’t believe support should stop at 3pm. Here, you can take part in opportunities all year round, including evenings and weekends, giving you the chance to build friendships, grow your social confidence and feel a genuine sense of belonging in your community.

Our approach means you’ll spend time out and about, try new experiences and build practical skills that help you take more control of your life. Through these experiences, you can discover what you’re capable of, grow your independence at a pace that works for you, and progress towards your personal goals, whether that’s volunteering, employment, further learning or greater independence in everyday life.

Who’s it for?

If you’re aged 16+ and have learning disabilities, learning difficulties or additional needs, we’re here to support you to explore your interests and take steps towards greater independence.

At Petty Pool in the Community, you’ll build confidence, form friendships and gain experiences, all shaped by your own choices and aspirations. We work alongside you to remove barriers, challenge assumptions and make sure you have access to the same opportunities as everyone else.

What Makes Us Different

This isn’t about filling time.
It’s about building a life.

At Petty Pool in the Community, support is shaped around real relationships, real experiences and what matters to you as an individual. We take the time to understand you, not just your needs on paper. That’s why our members tell us they feel listened to, respected and able to be themselves.

You won’t be expected to fit into a system. Instead, we’ll work with you to build confidence, grow your independence and take steps that actually mean something in your everyday life.

Our Programme

Our member-led activity programme is designed to support your wellbeing, encourage social connection and help you develop essential life skills.

You have the freedom to choose how you spend your time, based on what matters to you.

Your programme may include:

  • Creativity Sessions: music, singing, performance, art and digital skills
  • Out and About: visiting new places, trying new experiences and getting involved in your local community
  • Independent Living Skills: cooking, cleaning, shopping, travel training and online safety
  • Social Connection & Friendships: supported evening and weekend activities, concerts, day trips and holidays

Member Outcomes

Everyone’s journey at Petty Pool in the Community looks a little different, and that’s exactly how it should be. We focus on supporting you to make progress in ways that matter to you.

For some members, that might mean spending more time out of the house or feeling more comfortable in new situations. For others, it could be building friendships, accessing their community more independently, or taking steps towards work, volunteering or further learning.

We have really enjoyed supporting the group over the last few weeks. The members brought so much enthusiasm and positive energy to every session; it has been a pleasure to work with them.
Sarah Grindley, WVHT Employment Support Team

A group of our members recently took part in a series of life skills sessions designed to support their confidence, independence and personal development.

Delivered in partnership with Weaver Vale Housing Trust and funded by The Fusion21 Foundation, the sessions covered key topics such as budgeting, self-belief, job readiness and communication.

Across each session, our members showed great enthusiasm, building practical skills and engaging positively with one another, helping them take meaningful steps towards greater independence and future opportunities.
