Petty Pool Learners Complete Barista Training with VegEd

Hospitality and Catering learners at Petty Pool took part in a four-day barista training programme delivered by VegEd.

The aim was to develop practical skills, build confidence, and support learners to understand what working in the hospitality sector can look like.

Learners were at the heart of the programme. The focus was on hands-on learning, real-world experience, and creating an environment where everyone could take part and succeed.

About VegEd

VegEd is an organisation that delivers practical food and hospitality education. Their work focuses on inclusion, accessibility, and adapting learning to suit individual needs. VegEd supported our learners to gain real, transferable skills that can be used in future employment.

The course was delivered by Lisa and Mikey from VegEd, who created a supportive and welcoming learning environment for all learners.

The Training

Across the four days, learners explored the journey of coffee, from where it is grown to how it is produced and served. They learned about different coffee varieties and tasted a range of coffees. Learners also explored teas from around the world, helping them understand global cultures and traditions.

Guest speakers from the hospitality industry joined the programme. Learners asked questions, met new people, and learned about different job roles and career pathways.

Practical Experience

A key part of the training was hands-on practice. Learners used a professional coffee machine to prepare and serve different drinks. They practised in a mock café, taking turns to serve customers and work as a team.

Learners supported each other throughout the experience. Confidence grew as skills developed. Visitors at Chester Racecourse commented positively on the learners’ enthusiasm while being served in the mock café.

“The learners were fully engaged throughout the course. They supported each other, worked well as a team, and showed real enthusiasm while learning new skills.”

Learner Experience

Learners reflected positively on the training and what they achieved.

“I really enjoyed tasting the teas from around the world, particularly Hong Kong. I enjoyed meeting people from different countries.”

Sam said:

“I loved learning to use the coffee machine and making hearts on top (of the coffee).”

Katie shared:

“I enjoyed trying new things and learning how to make coffee.”

Daniel said:

“I enjoyed using the coffee machine and learning where coffee was grown.”

Harley said:

“I enjoyed making the coffee and learning to make a flat white and serving it.”

The Impact

The training helped learners develop barista skills, customer service, and teamwork. It also increased confidence, communication, and understanding of the hospitality workplace.

These are transferable skills that learners can build on as they move towards further training or employment.

This partnership with VegEd showed the value of inclusive, hands-on learning. It gave learners the chance to succeed in a real-world setting and take positive steps towards their future.
