Petty Pool Learners Ready to Take Charge on the Pitch

 

The next time a football match kicks off in Cheshire’s Ability Counts League, the referee could be a Petty Pool learner. Ten learners from Petty Pool College have become the first in Cheshire to complete an adapted FA Referee Course for people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), earning a nationally recognised qualification that will see them officiating competitive matches for the first time. Over eight weeks, the learners worked alongside Cheshire FA to develop the knowledge, confidence and decision-making skills needed to referee a game. The course was specially adapted through shorter learning sessions, practical activities and additional support, helping every learner build the skills needed to succeed.

Refereeing is about much more than knowing the rules. It means making decisions under pressure, communicating clearly and leading with confidence —qualities that will support the learners far beyond the football pitch.

 

The programme was funded through the Journey to Inclusion Fund, enabling every learner to take part free of charge and receive a full referee kit as they prepare for their first matches.

The learners will now officiate fixtures in Cheshire FA’s Ability Counts League, completing the five games needed to become fully qualified referees with the support of experienced mentors. For some, it could be the start of a journey into grassroots football. For all of them, it’s another step towards greater confidence, independence and new possibilities.
