Petty Pool Vocational College is at an exciting stage of its development! We have been fundraising to expand to a ‘new build’ with extra classrooms, a new farm and new reception area.
Here is a rundown of what we are aiming to achieve!:
We need to extend and increase our classrooms. This new, tailor made facility will have a significant positive impact on the success of our students. The building is designed with our students’ sensory needs, mobility requirements and general wellbeing in mind, we intend to build a new facility at the entrance of our existing site and it will consist of:
♦ Three new classrooms: enabling us to relocate some of our current classes and increase capacity.
♦ Brand new work experiences opportunities: a fully accessible reception area will enable students to work in this environment, welcoming visitors and answering enquires, as well as offering in house office experience due to a more accessible, effective and spacious work environment.
♦ Effective and modern learning environment: which will offer students easy access to advanced technology and software which will be used as an additional learning tool.
♦ A tailor-made learning environment: the building is designed to create a calm and effective learning environment, particularly for our students with sensory needs.
♦ A new animal care teaching facility: will replace our current ‘small animal’ stable block. This will create a facility which will not only be accommodation for the animals but a suitable learning environment for our students.
The need for expansion
Demographical changes, added to gaps in local provision and our growing reputation as an exemplar provider, means we have seen a huge increase in demand for our services. In response, we have enrolled additional students over and above comfortable capacity and our student numbers have increased from 78 to 98 in the last three years. Next academic year we are looking to increase this number further and enrol 110 students.
We anticipate this new building will allow us to support an additional 1000 students in the next 25 years.
Built over 30 years ago to accommodate a smaller number of students, our current buildings are too small to best support the students we have enrolled and despite ongoing care and investment. Ultimately, this will undermine our ability to deliver to the excellent standards we aspire to.
Not only are Petty Pools numbers increasing, but the cohort of our students is changing. There is an increasing demand for us to provide for students with a complex level of physical needs and we have more students using wheelchairs, walkers and those who are partially sighted. We want to provide students with an accessible facility which enables them to fully engage with our vocational courses and wider college life.
Outcomes of the new build:
• Increased access to services for new and existing students and ability to work with more young people
• Improved financial stability of the organisation: The increase in our student numbers will bring an estimated additional income of £150,000 per year.
• Improved vocational work experience for students leading to improved employment outcomes
Here is a timelapse of the first stage of development, levelling the ground ready for the new build.
The old farm comes down, 150 tonnes of soil is removed and the ground is flattened to make space for the NEW BUILD!
We’ll keep you posted on the development as it develops!
