EDEXCEL Entry Level Certificate in Skills for Working Life : Hospitality & Catering

Hospitality & Catering

During the course we learn about different cooking techniques in our professional kitchen. We learn how to prepare food, store it correctly and produce meals, following health and hygiene rules.

Hospitality and CateringWe are responsible for the running of the kitchen at Petty Pool. Every day we make and serve healthy meals and snacks to the students in the college canteen. We make a ‘soup of the day’ using vegetables grown by the Horticulture group. We learn how to serve our customers politely, take their orders and use the cash till.

Hospitality and CateringWe also provide lunches for visitors to Petty Pools Outdoor Centre, serving up to thirty visitors every day with buffets or soup and sandwiches.

We also run restaurant days for the other students. We plan our menu, shop for ingredients and invite students to book tables. In the last year we have held events to celebrate Valentines Day and Chinese New Year, where we cooked a Chinese banquet for everyone to try.

We are very proud of the realistic working environment we offer our students on this popular course.

The Hospitality and Catering course offers a clear progression route to supported employment, with a number of learners taking part in work placements in this area.

Two students who recently completed their final year at Petty Pool have gained paid employment following their work placements.  John now works as a Kitchen Assistant at Nunsmere Hall Hotel and Sarah as a Catering Assistant at Blue Planet Aquarium.
