Horticulture / Conservation

This year students are able to select units from Horticulture, Conservation, Floristry and Recycling.

P4230009.JPGStudents run and maintain a 60ft glasshouse and large vegetable patch. The group is responsible for running ‘Petty Pool Plant Sales’, a garden centre open to the public selling plants that they have grown and cared for. The group is also responsible for the upkeep of college grounds, supporting the maintenance team. Students working in conservation take part in work in our 30 acres of woodland, maintaining paths and caring for the animal and plant life in the area.

We are also working closely with the Forestry Commission on a bracken clearing project, learning the skills we need to work in the countryside. The floristry class keep Petty Pool looking beautiful with flower arrangements and are also starting their own floristry business. Our ecologically minded recycling students keep us all in check and make sure that Petty Pool ‘Reduces, Reuses and Recycles’ whenever possible.

“Students’ achievements are very good and in practical activities they are excellent.”

The Horticulture department is self funding through its business activities throughout the year.

During the summer season the group runs a Garden Centre which is now, due to its popularity, is open to the public two days a week.  This year students even went to sell the plants they had grown at Cheshire Police Headquarters in Winsford.
Students are invited to apply for the various job roles available and all wear uniforms.
Each year the Garden Centre has increased its profits, all of which go back into the Horticulture department.
This department is also popular with members of the public who support us through volunteering their time and expertise.
