City & Guilds Skills for Working Life : Business, Administration and Retail

Business, Administration and Retail

The Business, Administration and Retail course teaches us the various skills that we could use in the workplace, especially if we go on to work in a shop or an office environment.

Business, Administration and RetailOne of the units we study is called, ‘Working as a Retail Assistant’. As part of this we are responsible for running of our college ‘Tuck Shop’, which sells drinks, snacks and stationary to the students every afternoon. As well as serving customers and using the till, we learn about stock rotation, making sure that food doesn’t go out of date and stock control, so that we don’t run out of things to sell. We also do marketing projects where we ask our customers what they would like us to sell. We then go out to the ‘Cash and Carry’ to buy our stock.

Business, Administration and RetailWe make sure that all of the packaging and waste from our shop is disposed of properly and recycle whatever we can.

We also learn skills that we need to work in an office environment, including filing, meeting visitors and using the computer. Every day we collect and deliver the colleges post and record the outgoing mail, checking it has the correct postage on it. We also help with any large mail shots done by Petty Pool, photocopying, folding and stuffing and addressing envelopes.

“Support for students is outstanding. It is delivered through a culture which values the dignity and status of students.”

Business and Retail students play an important role in the administration of the college and run one of its retail outlets.

Office and Retail work is a popular employment choice for many of our students and many have enjoyed successful work placements in their final year.  Placements have included checking deliveries at Tesco, administration in Cheshire Police Headquarters Forensics department and a number of placement for local charities.  Andrew was offered paid employment and now works in Halfords Northwich.
