City & Guilds Skills for Working Life : Business, Administration and Retail
Business, Administration and Retail
The Business, Administration and Retail course teaches us the various skills that we could use in the workplace, especially if we go on to work in a shop or an office environment.
One of the units we study is called, ‘Working as a Retail Assistant’. As part of this we are responsible for running of our college ‘Tuck Shop’, which sells drinks, snacks and stationary to the students every afternoon. As well as serving customers and using the till, we learn about stock rotation, making sure that food doesn’t go out of date and stock control, so that we don’t run out of things to sell. We also do marketing projects where we ask our customers what they would like us to sell. We then go out to the ‘Cash and Carry’ to buy our stock.
We make sure that all of the packaging and waste from our shop is disposed of properly and recycle whatever we can.
We also learn skills that we need to work in an office environment, including filing, meeting visitors and using the computer. Every day we collect and deliver the colleges post and record the outgoing mail, checking it has the correct postage on it. We also help with any large mail shots done by Petty Pool, photocopying, folding and stuffing and addressing envelopes.

“Support for students is outstanding. It is delivered through a culture which values the dignity and status of students.”
