City & Guilds Skills for Working Life : Land Based : Animal Care certificate
Animal Care
During the course we learn the skills we need if we want to work with domestic or farm animals in the future.
On our purpose built farm and in the animal care classroom, we have a range of domestic and farm animals and are responsible for their welfare. We have goats, chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs and more. We also have a large outside aviary with budgies, cockatiels and finches.
As a team we clean out the animals and birds during the week as well as feeding them daily and monitoring their health.
During the year some of our animals have babies, which we sell to local pet retailers, such as Stapley. We also hatch our own chickens in an incubator. When they are big enough, we take them to Chelford or Beeston Animal Markets to sell. The money we raise helps to run the farm.
As part of our course we look at what products are made from animals, such as milk, cheese and meat. Recently we were shown how to spin wool.
In addition to our own farm, we regularly visit a local stables, where we help muck out and groom the horses.

“Students on the land based pathways at Petty Pool College gain high-level practical skills for employment through their work on the college’s farm.”
